Advent Calendar – taken from Celebrating Christmas

The most obvious expression of the countdown to Christmas today is the Advent calendar, a card with a flap for each day of the season, revealing something underneath. This is one of many aspects of our Christmas celebration.

When Advent calendars originated some two hundred years ago, they were religious, with each window revealing a Bible verse or an image depicting an aspect of the Christmas story. Later came the calendars with a small chocolate or sweet underneath. With the rise of the ‘commercial Christmas’, Advent calendars have become increasingly detached from anything to do with the origins of Christmas.
